September 07,2012 16:25

“There is legitimate indignation in regard to the pardon of notorious Ramil Safarov by Aliyev and we, the Armenian National Congress, being in serious opposition to this government, thought reasonable, nonetheless, to join this proposal made by the government, which convened an extraordinary session yesterday and proposed to adopt a condemning statement, we joined just to show national unity,” Levon Zurabyan, the leader of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) parliamentary group, said during a protest demanding the release of the imprisoned ANC activists, which was organized outside the Attorney General’s Office today.

According to him, that statement had many drawbacks, but “we, being an uncompromising opposition in this country, considering the state interests above everything else, regardless of how many years we have struggled as an opposition, are a force adherent to state mentality, can the same thing be said about the current government too? If the current government had even a shred of state mentality, they would understand that they had to stop political

persecutions against opposition forces, social activists, in order to meet the very external challenges, for the sake of our nation’s strength and unity and if they were a rational government, the first step Serzh Sargsyan had to take today would be the immediate release of  Tigran Arakelyan.”
