“The Only Solution to the Karabakh Issue Is to Become Parts of One Entity,” Ali Abasov Says

September 14,2012 22:06

We asked Ali Abasov, the head of a department at the institute of philosophy, sociology and law, Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, about the prospects of the Karabakh conflict settlement. He said,

* The prospects are bad. I have always said that unfortunately, the only possibility is for the three countries of the South Caucasus to become parts of a united geopolitical region. It may be the European Union, the Eurasian Union proposed by Russia, it may be the Transcaucasian Federation, which is not very probably, but is one of the options. It solves the problem of borders, what belongs to whom. Unfortunately, it is the only prospect at the moment.

* How can it be?

* If one is a part of a common territory, as the three countries (of the South Caucasus – V.S.) were parts of Russia at the time and the conflicts ended under force. Unfortunately, it turns out that we must wait for some influence of powerful

countries – say, the US, Russia, the European Union – because other options are not effective in our case.
