Sophia Gasparian is a Los Angeles based artist best known for her socio-political work. Although she doesn’t view herself as an activist, her provocative depiction of loss of innocence at the hands of evil gives the viewer a peek into the artist’s heart and mind. There is no question that she is passionate about the subjects of ethnic dislocation, the civil rights movement and an event that hits home- the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The artist was born in Yerevan, Armenia so the latter is a subject close to her heart. Inspired by her great-grandmother, who lost her family in the Genocide at just six years old, Sophia honored the memory of the tragedy in her exhibition “Requiem for the Forgotten“: The Armenian Genocide”, which was curated by the artist and featured her work and that of her contemporaries.
This is not the first time Sophia has donated one of her paintings for a worthy cause. Earlier this year, she donated one of her works for “Artworks for Healing” an event which benefitted the non-profit organization, “A Window Between Worlds”- helping survivors of domestic violence through art programs. The painting Sophia will be donating for Karmablast is titled “Global Warming”from her “Triumph” collection.
