During the festive meeting of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) near Saryan Statue on the occasion of the 21st anniversary of Armenia’s independence today, ANC parliamentary group leader Levon Zurabyan reminded that Armenia had gained independence with much difficulty, through struggle. In his words, after the Armenian leadership headed by Levon Ter-Petrossian had called a referendum on independence, the opposition was convincing
Ter-Petrossian to reject the referendum and speak the same language with Moscow and free himself of the Kremlin’s pressure. However, according to him, after the Soviet Union had collapsed, those same politicians urged Ter-Petrossian not to wait for the referendum, but to declare the independence quickly, otherwise it would be late, “Why do I give these examples? For a simple reason. Because during the whole period of the struggle for Armenia’s independence and afterwards, Armenia was governed by people who were never under pressure, they had a visible strategic goal, which they consistently pursued. And thanks to those leaders, Armenia was able to become independent without big losses and then to return from war. Independence is the best guarantee for democracy, but lo and behold, that important value – freedom and democracy – was destroyed by this predatory criminal-oligarchic government. Did we struggle for this independence or do the Armenian people need such independence? The time has come to add content to the independence, otherwise it is a pointless value.”
