“I would be the first hippie MP, which would be great,” singer Shushan Petrosyan, a member of the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary group, made such a promise before becoming an MP. Today www.aravot.am inquired of the MP whether she had, so to say, fulfilled her pre-election promise, whether she was a hippie MP and what she had done in that sense. She replied, “I am the way I have always been with my work. It is not for show. It is the essence. Those are certain standards of living. The standard of the hippie is love and peace.” In
response to our observation that we had suggested that her appearance would be hippie-like, the MP said, “How can one talk about a whole movement, which revolutionized the 1960s against war, against everything, in such a superstitious way. Peace should be even in dialogues. Love underlies everything.”
In response to our question whether she saw other hippie MPs in the parliament, Shushan Petrosyan said, “I see work. Perhaps, I don’t see that, but I see work, which is very important for me. I mean, I see work.” In response to our observation that she, being an artist, being romantic, differed from this political stage in a way, an artist had to be free and how she treated the decisions of the parliamentary group, whether there wasn’t a problem of principles, Shushan Petrosyan said, “It is the very principle that must necessarily be present. But you don’t know what goes on inside. There are clashes, conversations, debates inside, it is much more important. Because how can one know, perhaps, one’s idea may be the dominating one, win and why not, one may even direct. Everything is possible. In any case, the meetings of our parliamentary group are very interesting for me.”
