1+1 Doesn’t Always Equal 2

October 27,2012 14:03

The Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) and the Armenian National Congress (ANC) can compete with the current government in the upcoming election. I wouldn’t say that this is a very original idea, or that it can occur only to an oppositionist. Everyone who takes at least a little interest in politics can assume this even taking into account the amount of votes officially won by those parties in the latest parliamentary election. Who else? The deceived Heritage Party? The undecided Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF)? Perhaps, the New Times Party or the Union for National Self-Determination (UNSD)?

But for some reason, when that trite, understandable idea was expressed by Levon Zurabyan, the ANC coordinator, it was perceived as a sensation and got a firm response from the Republicans. By the way, the tone of that response was absolutely inadequate to the person about whom his MP colleagues talk. “He seeks after an office,” “he wants to earn his living,” it is as far from Levon Zurabyan as, say, the “art” of a female singer by the name of Lilu from me.

It seems to me that the time has come, when one should not only give up on personal offenses, but also think of things consciously, without emotions. If I for one say that Denmark can compete with the Italian National Team on equal grounds in our qualification group, it doesn’t mean that I like those two teams or root for them. No, I root for the Armenian National Team; I just try to objectively assess the strength of all teams. Perhaps, I am wrong.

In the same manner, I think Mr. Zurabyan is wrong, when he thinks that the union of the ANC and the PAP will be a nightmare for the government. It seems to me that it will be the option the government desires; both forces will be vulnerable in that case. The political capital of the ANC is a principled attitude toward the events of March 1 – if they “forgive” the force that voted for declaring a state of emergency, withdrawing the immunities of 4 MPs, didn’t condemn the existence of prisoners of conscience etc., the ANC will lose its political capital. And the strong side of the PAP is restrained, solid attitude without revolutionary extremes, which is incompatible with the fierce street struggle of the ANC “Gavroches.” As it is known, in the social life, the union of the two forces will not necessarily equal their sum total.

As for Levon Zurabyan’s statements, it would be very desirable, if the government responded to his remarks on the gas price, for example, with the same enthusiasm. The government is absolutely silent here, which promises nothing good for us in this issue.
