Members of the National Assembly standing committee on human rights protection and European integration have visited correctional facilities recently to find out about the living conditions of arrestees. The latest visit was to the National Security Service (NSS) detention

center on Friday. After the visit, there were contradictory articles in the press on what conversation the MPs had had in the NSS detention center with Nairi Hunanyan who had been sentenced to life in prison in regard to the October 27 case. www.aravot.am asked Vahe Enfiajyan, a member of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) parliamentary group, to clarify what they had talked about with Nairi Hunanyan.

“There was no particular conversation. The door of the cell opened and we wished to see the environment, in which Nairi Hunanyan had sheltered,” Mr. Enfiajyan said.

According to an article of 168 hours, Vahe Enfiajyan asked whether he had regretted for what he had done. Nairi Hunanyan said in response that the spirits of all them were in him. At least, he said nothing about regretting or being sorry about what he had done. In this regard, Mr. Enfiajyan told Aravot, “We wandered around the whole territory and talking to different prisoners, we asked different questions. We didn’t pay particular attention to him. It was just interesting what conditions there were in the cell.” As for what conditions there were in Hunanyan’s cell, according to Vahe Enfiajyan, “they didn’t differ much from the conditions of the other prisoners.”

Let us remind that MPs should analyze the impressions from visits to different correctional facilities and make clear proposals at the hearings to take place on November 20.

Naira Zohrabyan and Elinar Vardanyan, members of the group, said that the conditions in the NSS detention center were better than in the other detention centers. We inquired whether Enfiajyan shared this opinion. The answer was, “Yes.”
