The sounds of the Orient come to Vanuatu

November 13,2012 15:31

Composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Abaji shares his thoughts on music and multiculturalism

Abaji’s music embraces several cultures and languages.

Born in Lebanon, from a Greek-Armenian father and a Syrian-Armenian mother, Abaji grew up in France where his family migrated in the late seventies. French, he says, is the language of freedom but watching him perform live in our Melbourne studio, there’s no doubt music is the language of joy!

Abaji travels with a large case filled with instruments including a Greek boozooki and a Oud-sounding defretted guitar on which he played the song ‘Farache’, the butterfly in Arabic, before flying off to Brisbane on his way to Vanuatu for a concert at the Alliance Francaise in Port Vila.

Abaji will then take the mesmerizing sounds of the Orient to New Zealand, with shows is Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch later this month.
