Artist Stepan Veranyan noted during a conversation with www.aravot.am that despite the fact that the fragile statues set up recently were disgraceful, damaging them was not a good thing either: “Those statues are tasteless, there is no denying, no doubt about that, it is just shameful. I don’t know whose project it is, whether it is a project of the city hall, the Ministry of Culture or it has been done arbitrarily. I don’t have any idea, but it is doubtless that it is very bad. I am also against damaging; one shouldn’t do that.”
Mr. Veranyan thinks that the bad start was made with the sculpture group from the movie The Men and the statue of a backgammon player: “I am against such statues. Besides, they decorate buildings by mosaics, which are also a disgrace; they remind of Central Asia of the 1960s. For example, it is on the puppet theater, on the building behind it. They have tiled our building too; it looks like a public lavatory.
“Urban development and, generally, urban culture is a serious thing, one should measure thrice and cut once. Erecting a statue has been a complex thing since ancient Greece, because it is big influence and significance. Statues are objects that impart taste.”
