The presidential election is around the corner, and speculations about probable candidates’ nominations have already arisen. A set of figures have already stated about their nominations. The interesting novelty of this year is that female candidates are also active. Narine Mkrtchyan, the director of the National Press Club, Anush Sedrakyan, the deputy leader of the Free Democrats Party and businesswoman Silva Hambardzumyan are among possible female candidates.
www.aravot.am inquired during a conversation with them what chances they had to win, and whether there wasn’t a fear that under these circumstances of diversity, the opposition’s votes would be dispersed.
Narine Mkrtchyan, the leader of the National Press Club, said with regard to these questions: “Unless I have a decision on nomination and am officially nominated, I think it is inappropriate to discuss such possibilities. As for the question about dispersing the opposition’s votes, I don’t think that such a thing will happen.”
Anush Sedrakyan, the deputy leader of the Free Democrats Party, on the other hand, gave the following answer: “On the whole political stage of Armenia, if someone doesn’t adhere to any ideological value, s/he is an oppositionist. So those votes cannot be dispersed, since everyone is an oppositionist in principle. As for my nomination, it is early to talk about it, since the party hasn’t made a decision yet, and we tend to accord with the theory of relativity. If there is something concrete, we will talk about that. The votes of the opposition should be cast not to persons, but to ideas; it will be more constructive and effective.”
