“They Have Made the Presidential Election an Object of Ridicule”

December 14,2012 22:10

Garnik Isagulyan, a former permanent representative of the President of the Republic of Armenia in the National Assembly, is skeptical about his former colleague Hovik Aghzaryan’s nomination for president. “Are you serious that he has been nominated? It is called a New Year joke. Hovik loves to joke, he used to joke like this when he was an MP, and I am sure it is a joke now too. He doesn’t have a political team, he hasn’t been engaged in politics in the past 10 years,” Mr. Isagulyan said to www.aravot.am.

Mr. Isagulyan doesn’t see his former colleague as a candidate for president, “The current situation in Armenia is such that anyone nominates himself for president. God forbid that this joke should be serious, and it should just so happen that he wins. We don’t have a right to turn Armenian presidential elections into such a farce, we don’t have a right to belittle it so much and turn it into an object of ridicule. I would give Hovik a piece of friendly advice not to go for that game, not to be involved in that little game. Moreover, let me say plainly that this man has doubtlessly not resided in Armenia for the past 10 years.”

In Mr. Isagulyan’s opinion, Martik Sargsyan and Vardan Sedrakyan, an expert in epic poems, are not serious candidates for president either, “It is shameful. I talked with the expert in poems; he doesn’t even fully understand the meaning of the epic poem. Martik Sargsyan is an ordinary farmer, what then?”
