To Trust Gallup’s Poll or to Look for Intrigues?

December 21,2012 13:12

The results of a public opinion poll ordered by ArmNews, a TV channel, were made public yesterday. It was conducted by the Armenian Sociological Association and Baltic Surveys/ The Gallup Organization. According to the results of the poll, the potential votes of the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) leader, Gagik Tsarukyan, were distributed in the following way: Serzh Sargsyan – 36%, don’t know – 20%, others – 18%, Robert Kocharyan – 13%. www.aravot.am inquired of Karen Kocharyan, a political technologist, whether he trusted Gallup’s data and whether these results really reflected the internal political situation in the Republic of Armenia. Mr. Kocharyan answered our question in the following manner: “I can say one thing that regardless of which sociologist and which organization it is, I don’t believe any public opinion poll conducted in Armenia. As the saying goes, you cannot catch old birds with chaff.” As for which candidate G. Tsarukyan’s voters would join, in the political

technologist’s opinion, K. Kocharyan said the following: “Let’s say Santa Claus, or, as it is written there, Robert Kocharyan. We don’t know who is nominated yet, let us wait till they announce their candidacies, then we will know. I don’t participate in those pointless speculations.”

According to political scientist Hrant Melik Shahnazaryan, he doesn’t have any reasons to doubt Gallup. He went into detail: “The fact that the PAP mainly attracted the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC) voters in the run-up to the parliamentary election, and the fact that people disappointed with the ANC joined the PAP let me claim that they will not return, since they have already given up on the ANC once. Therefore, they should either look for a new alternative or confirm and affirm the reality, which has already been confirmed, and where the logic of developments is more or less understandable. In this sense, I don’t rule out that the majority of votes will be won by Serzh Sargsyan.”
