“At an Older Age, Political Experience Would Also Have Been Useful for Governing the Country,” a Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) Says

December 28,2012 10:40

RPA MP Koryun Nahapetyan, the chairman of the National Assembly Defense, National Security and Internal Affairs Commission, opposing the excuse made by first President Levon Ter-Petrossian that he was 68 years old, that was why he didn’t nominate his candidacy, said during a conversation with www.aravot.am that with age came wisdom. Being old or young is relative, “The Constitution stipulates that the minimum age for candidates is 35 years, and it means that anyone over 35 can both aspire and be elected as the President of the Republic of Armenia. And the experience of different countries shows that with regard to the maximum age, it cannot be an obstacle to presidency.”

Koryun Nahapetyan doesn’t agree with another observation of the first president that a person aged 68 cannot be as active as a person aged 40-60, “A person can be 40-60 years old and be less capable of work than a 68-year-old person. It is subjective and is related to the given person’s wishes, capabilities and approaches; what capabilities he thinks he has. If a man has health problems, he can have those problems at the age of both 40 and 68. Naturally, the older one gets, the more problems he has, but I think that at an older age, political experience would also have been useful for governing the country.”
