“He Proposes Neither Conditions Nor Tasks Nor a Process,” Galust Sahakyan Says About Robert Kocharyan’s Interview

January 15,2013 15:37

Robert Kocharyan, the second President of the Republic of Armenia, mentioned three reasons why he hadn’t announced his candidacy for the upcoming February 18 presidential election in his interview given to Mediamax, an information agency. In response to a question of www.aravot.am whether he considered those reasons grounded, Galust Sahakyan, the Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) parliamentary group leader, said: “It is the second president’s speech; certainly, it is interesting, but I think there is no need for special analyses under these political conditions. It is an opinion; he expressed his opinion, he commented on why he hadn’t announced his candidacy. One can either accept it or not accept it or try to find something in it. I mean the interview should be respected, but I think that in terms of the current situation, he proposes neither conditions nor tasks nor a process.” We inquired whom and what Robert Kocharyan wanted to say by that interview, in particular, when he said: “A search for political compromise has turned into political retail in Armenia.” Galust Sahakyan responded: “I think one should perceive the interview literally. One shouldn’t look for overtones. He said what he thought. One may or may not accept it.”

Robert Kocharyan’s interview made a “very ordinary” impression on our interlocutor. “It is a speech of an Armenian, the second president.”

In response to next question of ours whether the second president had intentions to return to high politics or not, in his opinion, the RPA MP said: “It is not the time to examine, discuss and make prognoses about that. We still have a presidential election ahead of us, and after every presidential election, there is a new political situation, new political conditions; there are new approaches. Therefore, it is not the right time to make analyses.”

And the prominent RPA member doesn’t care about the fact that Robert Kocharyan talked about the rise of emigration and the deepening of the economic crisis in Armenia after his presidency. Moreover, he says: “It is the same as we say, as the opposition says; it is just political speculation. Therefore, if you look at the president’s current program, you will see that we realize all that, and the future program will be devised based on those vulnerable sides of our society’s life.”
