Grigor Harutyunyan, the secretary of the People’s Party of Armenia (PPA), a member of the Armenian National Congress (ANC), basically agrees with the ideas expressed by Sasun Mikayelyan, a member of the ANC, in his article published in The Armenian Times. During a conversation with www.aravot.am, Mr. Harutyunyan said that he had one reservation with regard to Sasun Mikayelyan’s observations about participation in the presidential election. In our interlocutor’s opinion, one shouldn’t participate in the regular election, since one cannot change the power in Armenia through that. “This should be stressed; it is not mentioned in Sasun’s article. On the contrary, he stresses that we should have participated in the presidential election. I don’t think Sasun’s approach is right.
However, the observations about the age qualification and a replacement are basically right,” Grigor Harutyunyan said.
Our interlocutor doesn’t share the idea that Levon Ter-Petrossian deliberately brought the national movement to an end. “No, let us not make accusations. That man did as much as he could. One shouldn’t say something like that. Did he do it intentionally? No, it just happened so. I don’t accept the idea that Ter-Petrossian brought the struggle to an end. No, there is no such thing. I have participated in all election campaigns, I have heard his speeches; therefore, one shouldn’t make such accusations.”
We inquired whether the PPA might officially raise those issues at the ANC political council today. Grigor Harutyunyan said that he couldn’t say anything on behalf of the party.
