The Election Campaign Lacks Literacy, Interestingness, and Originality

January 29,2013 20:58

The election campaign was launched 8 days ago. Candidates for president uniquely stage their election campaigns. One of the candidates is on a hunger strike, another one directly communicates with voters, another one wanders from region to region, and another one hasn’t started his campaign yet. www.aravot.am tried to find out during a conversation with experts in the field which candidates stand out for uniquely using different kinds of technologies and literacy, and how one can describe the election campaign. The majority of them described the election campaign as uninteresting.

Samvel Martirosyan, a media expert, replied: “According to me, all this lacks literacy most of all. However, if we consider originality, Raffi Hovhannisyan has managed to cause a sensation with his campaign. So he has been attracting attention for a few days, moreover, not only positive, but also negative. However, he is able to attract attention in this case. Although Andrias Ghukasyan is on a hunger strike, the attention has been directed to someone else anyway. The other candidates use very standard things; I don’t see any unique thing. The uniqueness of this election campaign is that there is no confrontation, as during the parliamentary election. This is a campaign of parallel lines; one is under the impression that the other candidates don’t exist at all. Everyone has created his scenario and pushes ahead with it. And the biggest mistake is that the candidates conduct their campaigns very uninterestingly. Generally, the mistakes are not many, since the steps are few.”

Tigran Kocharyan, an expert in information security, thinks that two candidates stand out – Serzh Sargsyan and Raffi Hovhannisyan. They use all possible means of propaganda and offer rather interesting solutions. They present themselves everywhere possible. “Bagratyan wanders around the country, has meetings, Andrias Ghukasyan is on a hunger strike; I cannot say that he takes part in the struggle, one cannot understand what Aram Harutyunyan is doing. I hope that we won’t hear about him as of February 1. The expert in epic poems promised to conduct an election campaign as of February 1. It is interesting how he will do it, since he has quite a lot of money. I see two candidates who treat the election seriously – Raffi Hovhannisyan and Serzh Sargsyan. They move on in accordance with the rules, but Raffi Hovhannisyan has

taken a more original path, he conducts a rather Western campaign, but in many cases, the people don’t accept it. He says hi to everyone on the street, I don’t know what impact it will have, since the Soviet stereotypes are still strong among people. They are surprised, but will they vote for Raffi Hovhannisyan after all this? I think no.”
