“The assassination attempt on Hayrikyan is made very professionally, as a result of which we have abundant versions and no answer to any question,” Styopa Safaryan, the secretary general of the Heritage Party, said during a conversation with www.aravot.am. It seems suspicious to Mr. Safaryan that the most circulated version is the version that external forces organized it. “When they say that it is organized by external forces and, at the same time, intimate that Armenia is too weak a state to solve a foreign conspiracy it is a testimony that that they are not willing to solve it. Why do they continue to claim that this is an external interference, not internal? When they talk about the Russian version it is obvious that the
government cannot solve such a crime and accuse a strategic ally of hatching a plot inside the country. If such a version is supported, they want to tell us not to cherish any hopes that it will be solved.”
According to Mr. Safaryan, the assassination attempt was in everyone’s interest, but the question “Who benefits from it?” may have nothing to do with the question “Who did it?” “That assassination attempt creates an atmosphere of fear in society, and it will be in the government’s interest, because they know quite well how to deal with society living in an atmosphere of fear. The government’s reproduction is more important for the government than any international criticism or its own voters’ mocking, ‘Is this the secure Armenia?’”
In his words, perhaps, the government will make public some details or make revelations about the assassination attempt in the pre-election and post-election period, in order to influence the process. “Since the government should talk about versions in the short-run, give information about the preliminary investigation, the next two weeks will be seasoned with police information. This means influencing the political process, circulating some people’s, some political forces’ names, pointing the arrow in this or that direction at the right moment.”
