Will the Establishment of a New Party Lead to Dissolution of the Armenian National Congress?

February 08,2013 16:17

Levon Ter-Petrossian stated: “It is the time for the Congress to become a united party.” www.aravot.am inquired during a conversation with political scientists whether the establishment of a party would not lead to dissolution of the ANC, since the member parties of the ANC were not that excited about establishing a united party from the beginning.

Ruben Mehrabyan, an expert of the Center for Political and International Studies, stated that the ANC had collapsed long ago and went into detail: “What Levon Ter-Petrossian proposes is just the logical continuation of self-dissolution. It is not even important whether it was right or wrong, since in any event, it will not have a considerable impact on political processes. It will be a storm in a teacup, a change of scale, which doesn’t have a chance to make an impact on the socio-political processes. Levon Ter-Petrossian’s interview was not an appropriate interview for an acting politician. The current situation was commented on from such a viewpoint as if the commentator had nothing to do with all this. We are talking about a marginal force. And marginal forces are forces that don’t have and cannot have any impact on the main processes.”

Political scientist Levon Shirinyan stated: “The ANC is an alliance, in which different groups, people with different past and future are gathered for a change of power. They perceived it as ousting R. Kocharyan, then S. Sargsyan and their return. However, they haven’t performed that task. Since they haven’t performed it, the ANC becomes pointless, as far as its aim is concerned. One cannot understand why it remains. Only those who haven’t clearly comprehended the Armenian political stage aim at remaining in that form. The Republic of Armenia needs normal, good parties that have an ideological basis. However, there is one problem; if it is a liberal party, what does social mean? They want to please the people; it’s their perception. As for the clamor how can one destroy the ANC, let me answer why can’t one destroy something that is already destroyed? If some people don’t want it, it is their problem. There was a party of one man; it joined the ANC. If L. Ter-Petrossian with his liberal supporters separates, such parties will consist of one man, with their sons and mothers-in-law. The ANC is destroyed; it has either played its historic role or not. The emergence of a party is only too praiseworthy as far as the national interest of the Republic of Armenia is concerned, only if the aim is to establish a liberal party.”
