“Whoever It Is, It Must Be Labeled,” Tigran Davtyan Says About Alex Grig and Sas Group

March 07,2013 17:02

The Minister of Economy thinks that the rules of the game should be the same for all enterprises

The State Agency for Market Supervision, Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia, fined Alex Grig and Sas Group the other day, because there were no labels and no compliance certificates on food commodities. Alex Grig will be fined 900 thousand drams, and SAS Group 800 thousand drams. Today www.aravot.am inquired of Tigran Davtyan, the Minister of Economy, what the reason for choosing these two enterprises was. “There is nothing unusual; it is an ordinary procedure,” Mr. Minister assured. According to him, the checks the agency was carrying out aimed at “establishing law and order in the market.” In Mr. Davtyan’s words, during the checks, the main emphasis was put on following the rules of certification and labeling issues. “The amounts of those fines are too small to cause serious problems for big businesses, but it is an issue of legislative regulation, but on the other hand,

we don’t want to burden enterprises, and the size, the amount of fines is not important for us, the important thing for us is that the rules of the game are followed by everyone, that the system works. If there is mandatory certification, then it must be done; whoever it is, if there is a requirement for Armenian labels, they must have those.”
