“The Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) Should Take the Lead,” Aram Sargsyan Says

May 27,2013 23:22

“I stick to my opinion that Armenia and the NKR are not ready for those changes at the moment, because their conception is not clearly defined, so that they could offer something new based on it,” Aram Sargsyan, the leader of the Democratic Party of Armenia, said during a conversation with www.aravot.am.

The thing is that certain political and analytical circles say that the rapprochement between Russia and the US, which is accompanied by statements of various high-ranking officials about the need for changes in the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, will lead to invigoration of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement in the short run. And when the interests of the US and the Russian Federation in that issue coincide, Armenia and Azerbaijan will not be able to play their “own game” on the contradictions of the two superpowers.

Aram Sargsyan thinks that the NKR leadership should interfere in this process immediately and state that they have been trying to solve the issue without the NKR for 25 years and they haven’t managed to do that; therefore, the NKR people should not wait for others to determine their fate any longer. “A new-old approach should be taken that the NKR should be a participant in all the processes. The NKR should remind the world that the substance of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is legal, and if a political solution hasn’t been found for 25 years, one should switch to the legal domain and solve the issue there. Otherwise, I think that the Armenian sides will lose the initiative, as it has always happened, and we will hope that we will be able to achieve our goal, by maintaining the status quo. However, it is not right. The NKR should take the lead,” our interlocutor said.
