“I don’t see anything unusual in the visit and statement of the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs. There will be elections in Azerbaijan, and I don’t expect any progress, development as yet. It was another routine visit; what else should they have said? They have been saying for 20 years that one should activate, the status-quo should be changed,” Alexander Arzumanyan, a National Assembly member and a former Minister of Foreign Affairs, said about the visit of the co-chairs to the region and the statement they had released during a conversation with www.aravot.am today.
In his words, “I don’t expect any activation in the conflict settlement process. There has been no unusual statement yet. The same formulations about activation etc. that had always been used were said. If you are talking about the statement of the Russian Foreign Minister, then yes, there were some new elements here.”
Let us remind that Sergey Lavrov, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, stated at a press conference after a meeting with Elmar Mamedyarov in Moscow: “It is clear that the status-quo is unacceptable; moreover, it is unacceptable for everyone, first of all, for Azerbaijan, Armenia and those who live in Nagorno-Karabakh. I really am sure of that. The status-quo means not only failure to solve the issue of the Azeri territories’ return, but also Armenia’s economic blockade. That is the reason why there is no need to convince anyone in the unacceptability of maintaining that situation.”
According to Alexander Arzumanyan, “The Russian Foreign Minister’s statement contains new elements that don’t befit our geostrategic partner. As for the Minsk Group co-chairs’ statement, it is completely in line with the logic of their statements in the past few years; no new element is noticeable.”
