“Effective” steps

July 10,2013 16:03

The Ministry of Interior Affairs of the Great Britain has banned the entry of 60 citizens of Russia to their country. Those punished are the doctors, judges, and “stewards” who participated in lawyer Sergei Magnitsky’s murder, one way or another. (Earlier, the U.S. Congress passed a similar resolution). Some people are happy in Russia, from now on the people who torment and distress the prisoners, will keep them more alert, will understand that they will not go unpunished. It seems to me that it’s at least a naive approach. Because people feel that their crimes will receive fair compensation only when it happens in their own country, so to speak, at the national level. And when it is done by any country or international organization, including the European Court, there is always the “justification” that they are imperialistic intrigues against our country, that the West is hypocritical, that there are human rights violations there too and so on. Moreover, judgment about hypocrisy and violations are principally correct, and the moment of intrigues can not be excluded. But it changes the direction of the conversation, and enables our local criminals to feel themselves unpunished.

What is the benefit of having, for example, any country or in any international instance adopting a condemning decision or a statement regarding Liska and his family? Will our life become better if he and Zarzand, let’s assume, are banned to enter the House of Lords of the Great Britain? Absolutely.

The important thing is that they succeeded to “water” previous cases, and now Surik Khachatryan was able to hire the best lawyer. But, still it’s nothing, much more important is that he has another lawyer, on behalf of the military prosecutor Gevorg Kostanyan, who has managed to do a series of “liska-oriented” statements (although, as I understand, it is not the prosecutor’s business). And the most important thing is that the judge is going to be the third lawyer of the former governor, who apparently will adopt a decision that Liska’s family was busy with necessary self-defense.

Now, what is more important that proper investigation and a fair trial are conducted in Armenia, or, let’s say, the State Department states in its annual report that our investigative and judicial bodies do not operate independently. The ‘efficiency’ of similar reports are completely reflected in the Russian saying: “But Vaska listens and eats” (translator’s note: Turn a deaf ear).
