“Battle of nerves” in the Armenian-Russian relations

July 17,2013 17:17

Russians are thoughtfully, with their own hands, destroying our belief in the stereotype that “Russia is the only sponsor of security in Armenia”.

By the decision arrived at the court of Tver Districts of Moscow, the Armenian-born Gayane Grigorynts is appointed as a state prosecutor for the case of the arrested citizen of Armenia Hrachya Harutyunyan.

Definitely, this is not an accident, nor coincidence, and if we, Armenians, were still justly accusing the Russian law enforcement for humiliation of the Armenian citizen H. Harutyunyan, starting from appearing in such psychoses situation and bringing him to the court room dressed up like this (by the way, with this manner, Russian law enforcement, first of all, display impiety towards their country and RF court), and seated behind the bars,  appointing an Armenian prosecutor for this case seemed putting everything in their places by displaying exceptional cynicism of Russian policy towards the tragedy.

The offensive expressions against H. Harutyunyan appeared in Russian media for several days were little, now, driven with the principle of let an Armenian solves the issues of an Armenia, we unwillingly appeared in the phase of weighing pros and cons in the Armenian-Russian relations that have not become so smooth recently in the result of human tragedy.

All the criticism directed against Armenia’s authorities is appropriate, and if not the scandal of the last two days, the authorities of Armenia would treat as they were doing until now. And it is worth mentioning that Armenia was constantly carrying out a policy of sort of keeping silent with regard to often killings of Armenians in Russia. And now it’s time to raise the question, what if the authorities of Armenia did behave like that, perhaps, today we would be the witnesses of decent treatment towards the driver as a result of a car accident…

A month ago, an Armenian-born builder was arrested in Krasnodar region of Russia for cable theft, afterward brutally beaten and raped. Sochi resident Mardiros Demirchyan, in an interview with the “Caucasian Knot” website, said that after a few hours of beating, the police raped him with an iron crowbar, after which he agreed to sign any statement.

No matter how many assessments are heard today that the human tragedy cannot be made an issues in the Armenian-Russian inter-governmental relations, however, something seems to have become undisputable, Russian side goes to escalation of policy in the relations with Armenia, by tuning the “struggle of nerves” and using any opportunity. Gas prices increase, selling of offensive equipment to Azerbaijan, Azerbaijan pleasing formulations regarding the Nagorno Karabakh conflict on the level of Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov, and, now, the attitude towards the Armenian driver.

One gets the impression that Russians are thoughtfully, with its own hands, destroying our belief in the stereotype that “Russia is the only sponsor of security in Armenia”. Perhaps this, to some extent, is even a positive phenomenon, but in such a situation, the authorities of Armenia should be more alert to avoid the wave of anti-Armenian moods in Russia, as the strategic ally, as it appears, does not go for any discrimination in the matters of choosing funds.

A year ago, no one still could have imagined that, one day, the citizens of Armenia will hold protest actions in front of the Russian Embassy. While, yesterday, the second protest action took place, the preceding one was against “Gazprom”.

Why the Russian policy has become more escalated, there were arguments heard around many reasons in recent months, and there is no need to repeat them. But the recent events are additional reasons with regard to working towards the direction of making the relations between Russia and Armenia equal to equal, without inflamed passions and emotions, so that the chain of violating national dignity is extended endlessly.

Empire worship countries have always been, especially the Russian Empire worship, the existence of which in today’s world, with the capacity of “high boot” power, shows that the methods of keeping the empire, perhaps, were not too much left in the Russian arsenal. Russia has lost Georgia, Moldova, is losing Ukraine, a part of the Central Asia… And if the time to keeping small and abandoned Armenia by strength has come, we have to admit the importance of our country in this region, and at that time, perhaps, we can force the strategic ally to respect Armenia statehood, and the rights of RA citizen.
