Recently, the first President of Armenia Levon Ter-Petrosyan in a party meeting referred to the decision of Serzh Sargsyan on entering into the Customs Union, and made a political scientific analysis. He expressed concern that if before they were attached the label of pro-Western, now the authorities will try to attach the label of “anti-Russian”. Aravot.am was interested from the “Republic” party leader Aram Sargsyan accusing the decision to enter into the Customs Union whether he does not have similar fearfulness that they will try to attach the label of anti-Russian to him, as well, he answered,- “In 2003, when I said at the “Republic” Congress that Armenia should cut umbilical cord of RF, they started to attach labels. I’m not afraid of labels. Unfortunately, Armenia is not a geopolitical player, the major playing superpowers in this region are Russia and the West, we have to make a choice between geopolitical players. Which path will take us to welfare? Those who consider that the authorities should not be elected like in Kazakhstan, Belarus, and RF, they agree to survive in backward economy and corruption, let them prefer the Customs Union. I respect their opinion, but I can not accept it.
I think that Europe took the universal values enshrined in the Christianity and introduced into the political field. Today their living standard is the highest, even in the financial-economic crisis. It is there that the young man achieving education makes progress, it is there that the science is developing, the man is respected.” To our question as to why many people do not criticize the decision on entering into the Customs Union, but criticize the manner of making the decision, for example, Levon Ter-Petrosyan finds that if just from the beginning upon receiving the Association Agreement, Serzh Sargsyan would go to see Putin, and said that this is recommended to me, his today’s decision would not be so shameful, Aram Sargsyan replied,- “I am telling for sure that we have initiated political discussions with the forces, who not only write in their programs that they see the development of Armenia in Euro-integration, but also to fight for it. The most important is the political decision, because the economy is developed according to political preference.
Finally, any economic analysis will not change the situation; will not make a desirable for real. Today, we have to decide what we prefer, slow and unpromising decomposition into Asian interests, or European integration bringing difficult but developing real perspectives. Today’s political decision refers also for tomorrow. Sooner or later, Armenia will face to Europe, it’s a pity to lose time, because apart from the time we are losing also people who leave Armenia and many of them will not return.”
