Unlike Georgia and Moldova, which are to initialing the EU Association Agreement on November 28-29 in Vilnius (we also have had such an opportunity, but we abandoned it on September 3), Ukraine had already passed this stage, and was to sign the agreement. During this week, there emerged doubts about it.
It all started on Wednesday, when the Ukrainian Supreme Rada (the parliament) gathered in a special session, and was to make “the final sketches” in “pro-European” laws. Two of the amendments to the laws were of “general nature” and were referring to the Prosecutor’s Office and the elections, these bills, particularly, were not objected. However, the bone of contention was the draft law that would maximum grant grace to Yulia Timoshenko, and if not, at least, would give the chance to Ukraine’s former Prime Minister to pass a treatment in abroad. For the EU, it is a matter of principal, do not think that only Russia has its perversity, sometimes, European bureaucracies and leaders also like to put two feet into one shoe.
However, Rada session did not take place. “Suddenly” it turned out that “the Party of Regions” (their Republican Party) has decided to bring down the session; probably, ‘the parties in power’ have such a habit everywhere. President of Ukraine, Yanukovich, also started to conduct vague talks about the fact that his country’s economy is closely related to Russia, that the product of its factories does not meet the European standards, as if he has just making this discovery. Does this mean that Ukraine will not sign an agreement with the EU, or Yanukovych simply wants extra money from Europeans? It’s hard to say. Instead, it is known that Yanukovych had a long conversation with Putin on October 27 and November 9.
Failure to sign Ukraine-EU agreement will give a good bargaining chip in the hands of our authorities, well, if this country – rich, large, close to Europe, not being in conflict with the neighboring countries, could not stand Russian pressure, then what do you want from us. And, probably, not only the authorities will think so. If Ukraine fails to sign with the EU Association Agreement, perhaps, it will not be so much comfort of white heart for us that it’s good that we are not the only one to be humiliated. But, if it signs, I, as well as people thinking like me will feel happy making sure that the Russian Empire is not the most powerful, and under intelligent and flexible policy, it is possible to maintain public and national dignity. So, let’s wish good luck to Ukrainians in the next few days.
