Will “breaking” of Azerbaijani websites by Armenian hackers cause tension at the border?

January 27,2014 17:12

After recent subversive developments at Karabakh-Azerbaijan border, when 19-year-old sergeant, Armen Hovhannisyan was deceased, the Armenian hackers broke about 13 Azeri websites on one night, which was a unique response to the fact of sergeant’s death at the Armenian border. The Armenian hackers had posted the photo of the deceased sergeant on the “broken” Azerbaijani websites. Regarding the appropriateness of this act and about how the attack of hackers can cause tension at the border, the political scientist Levon Melik-Shahnazaryan expressed the following opinion, “What is happening in Armenia: our inner life, etc., is of less interest to Azeri.

They are much more interested in whom their next singer will marry rather than in what is going on in Armenia. This hacker attack is useless thing. If it brings comfort to the soul, let them do it. I would use hackers for far more serious purposes. The level of hatred is so high there that none of our move can reduce this hatred.”

Aravot.am asked the Chairman of the Committee on Freedom of Expression, Ashot Melikyan, whether such hacking activities are at risk that tensions will increase. Mr. Melikyan responded, “There is a very complex relationship, and everything is possible under war. When one side is exercising provocative actions, the other side will use all the opportunities to impact. This, in fact, was a new phase in tension. Under these conditions, each side is trying to make response actions within its taste and opportunities. The Armenian side, perhaps, wants to hold back the activities of the opponent. But, hardly there was a need for a hacker in action. Every action requires giving an adequate response.”
