Majority of political arena does not consider the European as the path for Armenia’s development
The events around EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee sessions in Strasbourg, last week, gave rise to different discussions and estimations.
There are opinions voiced that after Armenia’s decision to join the Customs Union, the European Parliament has toughened its stance on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and comes up with formulations not favorable for Armenia, as a result of which, for the first time the EU-Armenia Parliamentary Cooperation Committee session ended without the adoption of a joint statement.
The fact that the European MPs from time to time were making speeches not favorable for Armenia on Karabakh issue is not a new tactic. Have the authorities of Armenia done anything for Armenia not to appear in a more complicated situation due to any decision made by Armenia, especially on the Nagorno Karabakh conflict?

In fact, neither Europe nor Russia, as they say, does not like Armenia for its “beautiful eyes”. All of them have their own geopolitical interests and are “smiling” or “showing their teeth” when something causes harm to this interest.
The matter is that people in Europe see that we do not perform any actual step in its broader sense within our country regarding neither Nagorno Karabakh, nor other problem resolution, starting from election transparency, judicial independence, and ended with the approval liberal economic rules and their actual use.
In other words, we are not able to cross the line, beyond which Nagorno-Karabakh problem will no longer continue to be a “leverage of pressure” in Brussels and a “whip or donut” in Moscow’s hands.
And to be surprised at why the Europeans today had toughened their stance on this-or-that issue, is naive. The EU will surely continue to be in relationship with Armenia, but, probably, the EU will not forget that within the entire political arena of Armenia, the supporters of the Customs Union membership were even unable to present advantages of why it was necessary for Armenia, they will also not forget that even those who are against the actions of current authorities are unhappy that the decision on joining the Customs Union was not made by them, but Serzh Sargsyan, based on Armenia’s unfavorable positions.
In other words, the overwhelming majority of Armenia’s political arena, with the exception of a few politicians and parties, let us honestly admit and state, do not consider the European as Armenia’s development path. Good or bad, and why it is so, this is a topic for another discussion, but unless there are the following question in terms of guaranteeing Armenia’s security of who will be “guarding” our borders, who will protect us, who will sell us cheap weapons, and who will supply gas to us, we need to cope with that there will be harsh attitudes always, moreover, from both sides, the West and the north.
