Astghik Gevorgyan, President of the Union of Journalists, has still not managed to learn about the news of spanking journalist Ani Gevorgyan yesterday at the Police department. “I first time hear that such a thing has happened with journalist Ani. How could we know? I am not familiar with the circumstances, however, I condemn it. What does it meant to spank a journalist, moreover, a woman? Council of Ministers of the member countries are imposed by the law that the police actions against journalists shall be within permissible limits and shall never contain such displays, whereas this case shows that, in fact, our state fails to execute the decision of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers. And we are proud that the police officers behave them quite restrained during demonstrations,” said Ms. Gevorgyan. To our questions of if the Union of Journalists is not even aware of the violence against journalists, how it will support them, protect their interests, Ms. Gevorgyan responded, “We have a representative in every editorial, we have agreed to give us the news to appeal to the relevant authorities. For example, we receive news from the regions and we follow up, anyway, I first time hear about Ani. How could we know if we have no information at hand?”
