Passions over the Commission

March 11,2014 13:59

I do not know how it is in overseas, but in Armenia, no parliamentary commission has solved any problem. Recall, what the Commissions on ArmenTel, fuel oil and October 27. Have the MPs and their electorates somehow got closer to the truth, or was it just an excuse to accuse each other? There was also once a March 1 Commission. As I can recall, during the rally, the ANC leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan has jokingly delegated Gevorik, an ANM member, still not completely a RPA member, to the Commission. And this ironic attitude is absolutely justified, because the effectiveness of this Commission’s operations was equal to zero.

Quite different is the evidence-collecting group operating on the same matter, in which Andranik Kocharyan and Seda Safaryan have worked diligently within the scope of their liabilities. However, later, Mr. Kocharyan, as you know, withdrew from “the ANC line”, and probably this is the very reason why quite remarkable speeches of this group are not cited.

What should the new Commission to be established for the same matter explain, with or without Gevorik? That the police operations at the Freedom Square on March 1, in the morning, were not legitimate? That on the same day, in the evening, the guilt of killed and injured lies on the conscience of the then authorities and law enforcement institutions? It is absolutely clear for the society. To prove it legally is not the business of the parliament. After all, it is, of course, a good platform to voice accusations addressed to the authorities. Anyway, these charges can be voiced without any Commission.

Nevertheless, the Republicans, to put it mildly, inconsistent stance is surprising. It is at least the third time that this faction, in the beginning, is saying that it supports the establishment of such a commission, and then regrets at the last minute, being afraid of “political manipulations.” Perhaps, there is a real fear that such a committee will make sensational revelations. However, why does it agree in the beginning?

As for the political manipulations. For the Parliament, the word “manipulation” does not make any sense. If a physicist, dentist, or a shoemaker in doing their job gets into “political kailyards”, it certainly is not a good thing. But, the very politicians are gathered in the parliament who represent groups of political interests, and it is very natural that they would discuss any matter based on these interests. This is true all over the world. The parliament serves just for it.
