At the public discussion titled “Challenges Facing Armenian Statehood”, writer and publicist Vahram Martirosyan, after the speeches on bitter reality, sounded an optimistic note, “In the last twenty years, the people of Armenia has voted for the opposition during all elections. It shows that the situation is not hopeless, it is dire, but not hopeless.”
As formulated by V. Martirosyan, state officials are approved in Armenia, which does not have its own ideology, and from times to times, some a wave of nationalism is voiced as an ideology: Karabakh is endangered, the borders are endangered and so on, and with these demagogic appeals, the authorities continue to be reproduced in the course of years.
He also noted that the view of Russian-loving Armenian people is a myth, because until September 3, when Armenia was going to Europe over the years, no political party, organization, and social class complained, and revolted against the trend, but there were people revolting against the Customs Union.
In his speech, the President of “Asparez” journalists club, recalling his and his supporters rally against on September 21, 2011 against the presence of foreign flags and foreign troops on the Day of Armenia’s Independence, told how a senior police officer was trying to explain, “You are not doing good, there are people on the top, who know better than you and us of what is good, what is correct and what needs to be done.” Levon Barseghyan brought this example to show that there was an unwritten policy for those in power over twenty years, according to which, human rights and democratic values are contrary to our national security, “it seems that what our Constitution reads about human rights and democracy, we have adopted forcedly, under the threat of guns, whereas they are deeply convinced that these provisions are plots against national security, and it is a false contrast against human rights and national security.”

Levon Barseghyan noted that there have been many cases in the world at various times when the authorities of different countries were forced to sign a “bet” to preserve the state, in other words, to retreat for not losing. But, the RA government’s decision to join the Customs Union, according to Levon Barseghyan, can hardly be considered as such a tactical move to maneuver, because such haste that our authorities are running to enter the Customs Union, do not let us think so.
Since the possible revolt against the Customs Union was repeatedly mentioned during the discussion, the ethnographer Mkhitar Gabrielyan noted that no revolt against Russia or its created Customs Union is possible as long as we have hostages in that country. Saying hostage, he was referring to illegal immigrants. “Unless we have hundreds of thousands, perhaps even more, hostages in Russia, moreover, that much hostage in Armenia, who are fed with the money sent by their hostages living in Russia, no revolt can happen.”
