Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan. “Aliyev was subjected to ridicule by the delegated in PACE.”

June 28,2014 15:46

According to Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan, Armenia’s signing of the Eurasian Economic Union Agreement cannot be canceled for unknown reasons and the long term. “The situation seems to be regulated, and the tension that is due to the external factors, seems to have lessened,” announced political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan, today, on June 27, at the “Urbat” (Friday) press club, during the press conference with the journalists, referring to the events in Ukraine.

He thinks that it is good news for Armenia, but not Azerbaijan, because Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev sees that he misses the opportunity of occupying new territories. According to the political scientist, this is the very reason that we are witnessing victims from the Armenian side. “If Aliyev is convinced, and it seems that he is convinced, that the possibilities of the conflict as a result of external pressure are finally lost, he will try to possibly keep the situation tense, and sell the peace to the international community. In other words, through intimidations, it has created a situation when the same mediators will have to convince Aliyev to maintain the established status quo because, basically peace and predictability in our region is important for Russia, the United States, and Europe”.

Referring to the summer session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Mr. Melik-Shahnazaryan considered evident that Aliyev was subjected to ridicule by the delegates in the PACE. He noticed that it is for the first time that the President of the Republic of Armenia is voicing their policy of territorial claims to the Republic of Armenia from this platform, which was to be followed by an adequate answered, but it is being late. “The criticism that was voiced in the PACE might just be an unpleasant surprise for Azerbaijan, and, judging from the past experience, it will have no consequences for the state. It’s another matter that voicing the issue aloud somehow inspires the activists fighting against the government in Azerbaijan, and they hope creating an additional pressure factor on Aliyev’s government.”

To the question of Aravot.am of whether Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan thinks that Armenia would sign the Eurasian Economic Union agreement on July 1, he replied that if it is delayed it will be just due to technical reasons only, and it cannot be delayed for unknown reasons and long-term. “Importantly, there are no more political and economic obstacles. All the issues that were, first of all, available in the relations between Russia and Armenia, and later in the relations with the Eurasian Economic Union, seems to have been resolved, at least, it is heard from the interviews of the president and the words by the leaders of other countries.”
