“The Defense Minister was pretty quiet, I am extremely worried.” Hayrikyan about the tension on the border

July 04,2014 20:11

“The Defense Minister was very quiet. I, as a politician, am extremely worried. Failure to give an adequate international response by our government means to wait on these steps, because if the authorities are given to this or that patriotic and psychological point of view, perhaps justified arrogance, however, we are subject to international law. We need to use our leverage of international law, also for providing the security of our citizens. Even one shot was to be a cause for a very serious noise,” the leader of NSDU party, Paruyr Hayrikyan, expressed his concern about the tension created on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, in the conversation with Aravot.am. Recall that on July 1, near the village of Aygedzor, Tavush region, Azeri made an attempt of subversive and intelligence action and have tried to surround one of the RA Armed forces’ positions, which was suspended. According to Paruyr Hayrikyan, if the Armenian side says that we would also open fire, naturally, it can no longer claim at the international institutions that the ceasefire is violated. “As it is said at the single combat, choose which type of weapon you want, we were now choosing the type of weapon compelled by the opponent, while there are diplomatic weapons that can be used very effectively. It’s one thing, when you’re going for some actions to defend yourself, and quite a different thing when you have the international exposure opportunities and are not using them. For example, our president could have invited all, at least the OSCE country ambassadors and said that the ceasefire is violated. Well, let’s say that Levon Ter-Petrosyan, driven by his superciliousness, has made a mistake, by involving Armenia in the conflict, and put the signature of Armenia underneath this ceasefire document. Armenia has been just a guarantor. How is Armenia associated with this conflict? Now, Serzh Sargsyan could have said, an aggression is made against Armenia by the OSCE member state. We urge you to take actions. Armenia could have adopted purely a defensive stand.” Paruyr Hayrikyan also assured that now our actions are not equivalent, not systematic, and the consciousness of experience is missing. And this is a problem that requires a systematic approach.
