Europe and we. Beyond “red lines”

July 26,2014 15:47

The choice of our civilization is not on the agenda

Our too much “pro-Putin” and “Eurasian” compatriots argue that if Armenia had signed the EU Association Agreement, the next day “gay parades” would begin in Armenia, and two days later we would become a member of the European Union. As far as I know, such parades so far are not yet registered in Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, and being an EU member, these states, to speak mildly, are kilometers far away; the taxpayers in Germany and other developed countries currently, however, will not take on such a burden. Some people are doing campaigning on this issue, but some are really in delusion, and I would hurry to inform them that, in addition to European countries, which other states have signed the EU Association Agreement. Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, Canada, Lebanon, Morocco, Mexico, Palestinian autonomy (temporary), Tunisia, Chile, and South African Republics. Agreement negotiations are underway with Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Can we claim that all these states are the enemies of Russia, are installing the NATO missiles that threaten Russia’s security? These countries will never become an EU member, and will never be integrated into the Union, politically. It would also be difficult for me to claim that their public shares the European values and is going to live with those values. It is simply beneficial for these countries to tie their economies with the European market, to be orientated with European technology, standards, and organization of work, etc., and it, of course, does not exclude other economic ties. And, perhaps, the dictatorship regimes are beneficial for us, backward, Soviet-left technology, low productivity, indiscipline, shady business, and economy in crises. The choice, consequently, is not political, rather than civilizational.

The choice, seems, should be on our political and social agenda. It was, but in a negative sense. When since 2011, it became clear that Armenia’s authorities are conducting intensive negotiations with the EU on Association Agreement, the main opposition “trend” was to explain to the public that we are integrating with LGBT community. At this very time, emerged the “political scientific analysis”, which essentially laid the foundation for consolidation of pro-Russian forces. But our authorities turned out to be not less pro-Russian, and to keep their chairs, they are ready to be further “consolidated” with Putin. After September 3, the topics grew smaller, and the red lines and speedometers obtained a level of national problems. As for the political choice, the first plan came out to be the rebuke of why our accession to the Eurasian Economic Union is delayed. The answer to this question is more simple, Russia needed us not to sign the EU Association Agreement.

Russia does not really need that we enter into the EEU; it had “commenced a bazar” on this issue with Azerbaijan. Seems to be the moment that we once again discuss our civilization choice. But, it is apparent that during the two months of the summer, there will be no such discussion at all. In the fall, they will keep them busy with “red lines”, as well as will compete with the government about who will further enter into Putin’s (let’s put this way) pocket.
