Recently, the President Serzh Sargsyan had met with members of the Public Council. Among the many questions, the issue of accession to the Eurasian Union was also discussed. There was a question about why Armenia’s membership to the Eurasian Economic Union is delayed. Recall that with regard to the deadline for the membership, the Prime Minister, Hovik Abrahamyan, was constantly stating different dates, ensuring that that there is no problem, just technical issues.
But today, in the conversation with Aravot.am, the member of the Public Council, Arshak Sadoyan, presenting the details of his meeting with Serzh Sargsyan, told what response they have received from Serzh Sargsyan pertaining to protraction of accession to the Eurasian Union. “I had the impression that some forces are trying to create an impression with him that the Armenian people are very concerned about why the accession to the Customs Union is delayed. To be honest, I do not quite see a concern here about why it is delayed, moreover, many people want it to be delayed as much as possible, and if possible, not to enter into this Union. We got sufficient clarifications from the stances of Kazakhstan and Belarus. To be honest, there are questions that I have no right to tell by my personality,” said Mr. Sadoyan. To our question of whether, for example, Serzh Sargsyan responded why Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Union is delayed, Arshak Sadoyan replied, “It is normal that there are problems. As far as I understand, it is delayed not only because of Russia, but first and foremost, because of Belarus and Kazakhstan. It is completely evident for me that both Nazarbayev and Lukashenko are extremely worried about the events in Ukraine. In case of Russia’s success, it is very much likely that Putin will take away the sovereignty of Kazakhstan and Belarus, and under these conditions, they have absolutely no interest that a small country goes there and helps Russia with its behavior.”
We clarified whether Serzh Sargsyan made it so clear that Belarus and Kazakhstan are hindering our accession to the Eurasian Union, Arshak Sadoyan responded that it was his impression. But this impression is not denied by the president. “Serzh Sargsyan gave very Diplomatic answers that it does not depend on us …. But he did not say that it depends on Russia and so on and so forth. We could understand so from his words, but I have no right to say that my understanding is what he said. It was my impression, rather to say, not only my, very many people have the impression, simply as much as I understood, the president did not deny the possibility of getting this impression.”
