“Russia looks like a mammoth with a very serious and infectious disease.”

September 01,2014 16:27

Such an opinion is expressed by a public figure, Levon Barseghyan, about Putin’s Russia

Yesterday, the most important events in the world, perhaps, were the developments in Ukraine. President of Ukraine, Petro Poroshenko, officially applied to the UN to call on a Security Council session, arguing that Russian troops have invaded Ukraine. Furthermore, Ukraine also turned to the EU and NATO with a request of a military assistance. The likelihood of war has been dramatically increased. Pertaining to this theme, “Aravot” interviewed with Chairman of Board of Asparez Journalists’ Club NGO, Levon Barseghyan.

– What developments do you predict? Will Europe and the world initiate more serious and strict measures to halt Russia’s expansionist policy?

– I think that so far the EU and the West would not apply to any military intervention, most likely, they would further reinforce economic and political sanctions. And would support Ukraine with ammunition and military advisers.

– The Russian mass media claim that the third Maidan is developing in Ukraine, and dissatisfaction with the current government has reached its extremities. In addition, Ukraine’s economic collapse is predicted. In your opinion, do these black projections meet the reality? What is the way out for Ukraine to get rid of Russian pressure?

– I do not think that it is possible to take the comments by mass media under the yoke of the “emperor” seriously. In Ukraine, as far as I can judge by following various mass media, no such a thing is developing. Of course, Ukraine bears economic losses; Russia’s such propaganda makes efforts to cause hysteria and panic in Ukraine, but all they did were unsuccessful and futile. All areas, which were fertile, they already managed to foray: Crimea, more than half of the population are Russians, Lugansk and Donetsk – up 40 percent and that’s it. Russian military periodic intervention and equipping are the proof of the fact that the Kremlin’s expectations: nationwide uprising in Ukraine and provocation of Maidan-2, fail and are not justified, it remains to make aggressive war against the neighbor with Russian military forces and Russians money. So far, the Kremlin refrains from making explicit statements of war, but everything is predicted of Putin. A few days ago, they started talking about the use of a nuclear weapon.

– In fact, Russia has escalated an open war against the neighbor. Doesn’t the world have any restrictive and preventive method for such cases? What is expected? How do you consider the likelihood of the EU and NATO to interfere in military operations and regularly predicted the start of the third world war?

– By some interpretations, the third world war started with the Berlin wall, by other interpretations, the second did not happen and this is the continuation of the first one. In -late winter, I expressed my assumptions that there would be no evident war between Russia and Ukraine, I still think so that opening the playing cards by the Kremlin frees the West and NATO from diplomatic politeness, and the situation may be escalated in one of two categories. This is well-understood by the Kremlin, and yet, for some circumstances, it does not dare to enter into an open-front war. Maybe it is thinking that without it, it would be able to give irreparable losses to its former ally, to tear off another piece like the Crimea, by blackmailing everyone outside by gas and oil, whereas from inside, through persecution and violence, continue fancying to  be one of the greats of the world. The West, of course, clearly understands the complexity of the situation, but on the one hand, it has billions of euro-dollar investments in Russia, and on the other hand, I think they have noticed what Putin is capable to satiate his own self and extend the life of the Russian Empire for a few more years, they probably are trying to isolate and wait until further farsighted people from inside would neutralize him, or the Empire would give a crack from inside. The world has never had a tool against this kind of disasters, just remember similar predecessors. Because of Putin’s “heroic deeds” and self-centrism, Russia begins to look like a mammoth suffering from a very serious and contagious disease, no one is willing to deal with him, everyone puts us a fence, letting him to cope with himself alone, either he will be healed or die, opening of the fence is fraught with unpredictable consequences. Thousands of attempts were made in the past 20 years for healing or helping, the Kremlin has immunity against recovery.
