Traditions of “bowing”

September 03,2014 13:07

On September 1, this year, the Armenian language teacher of school No. 185, Sofia Artinyan, expressed her “bowing” to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Galust Sahakyan, who, according to Ms. Artinyan, is the founder of this school.

Actually, “comrade Sahakyan” as the teacher calls him, was the school principle during the Soviet years.

And on September 3, last year, the Government of Armenia made the decision to join the Customs Union. It seems that there is no connection between these two events, at first glance. In fact, the connection is obvious. In the country where the educators bowed before the “bosses” and bring up the children with this “bowing” spirit, the population of such country accept the decisions such as “September 3” with a bow.

What was the main Soviet school “doctrine”? Making people a bolt of a lofty goal, by possibly humiliating their individuality. Independent thinking and personal commitment for one’s own life were highly objectionable. Instead, it was common to rely on higher instances and cringe before them, no matter it is the class mentor, the school principal, up to “dear Leonid Ilyich.”

Can we say that in the last 24 years, the education was put on completely different bases? No, with a few exceptions, it is the same Soviet school, regardless of the fact that it is divided into primary and higher schools. Does it surprise you that the teachers in these schools are engaged in election fraud? That they cringe before the “bosses” visiting them, regularly reciting “Cheburashka speeches.” That they keep addressing each other with “comrade”.

The big part of graduates of this Soviet and “post-Soviet” schools are quite indifferent to the events taking place in the country. No, of course, they use curse words addressed to the authorities who “do not take care” about them, and dream about the kind of authorities who would ensure their prosperous life.

But when it comes to such “September 3” radical decision, they and their sentiments expressing political forces (almost all of them) take water into their mouths, and in fact, principally support these decisions. And if the government can easily pass such decisions, then aren’t we all responsible for them? Don’t they generate from our subservient, “bowing” traditions that remain steadfast for decades, and the bases of which continue underlying at the schools.
