“Armenia supporting Russia in international structures suffers enormous moral losses.”

September 05,2014 18:07

For the sake of what is Armenia led by this path of humiliation and losses?

Viewing from the prospect of morality and international law, everything is simple and clear: Ukraine is the victim of overt aggression by our ally Russia. Only the most biased or completely ignorant person will recognize the results of the “referendum” held within one week “in the polite presence of green small fries” and the annexation of the Crimea peninsula to Russia based on it legal. And those subordinating legality to justice and those saying that it is normal that as they gave it once upon a time, so as now they took it, are also unaware, as they are ignorant that when they were giving, they had cut off an equivalent piece from the north of Ukraine. But let’s see how Armenia displayed itself on this issue.

Our state, as represented by the ruling regime, did not only dare to join the vast majority of states in the world and vote “pro” to the famous UN resolution condemning Russia’s actions and defending the territorial integrity of Ukraine, not only, according to previously announced, voted “abstained”, moreover, voting “con”, it appeared in the dishonorable line of a handful rogue states. This stance is day-by-day becoming increasingly dishonorable, because Russia not being satisfied with Crimean trophy has passed to occupying the eastern Ukraine and does not almost hide its intension of reach up to Kiev.

It becomes increasingly dishonorable to be next to Russian also because our ally has not only overfilled its domestic but also the global information field with its open lies, slander and propaganda of hatred. These lies in our century of globalization and informatization are disclosed very soon, within days or hours, like, for example, the Russian fairy tales related to the Malaysian “Bowing” destruction and inhuman behavior by Russian “separatists”. No matter how it sounds painful for some of our compatriots who idolize Mr. Putin and strive justifying every move by Russia, Russia once again and clearly is viewed by the world as an empire of evil, and the head of its KGB as a newly appeared führer.

Willy-nilly, we must also record that Armenia supporting Russia at the international structures suffers enormous moral losses, and if we look attentively, it would not go unnoticed that as a result, the sentiment in other, practical dimensions, is also changed very quickly. Those who think that politics and morality are notions that are not related to each other, or those who genuinely would point out the use of double standards by all states in the world can claim that nothing extraordinary happens, that if Armenia guided by its own interests makes not enjoyable moves for the civilized world, then it is reasonable and completely fits in the ranges of real politic.

Indeed, Armenia, for instances, does not recognize Abkhazia’s independence, even though the Abkhazian people’s right to self-determination is indisputable, even though a significant part of the population of this unrecognized country are Armenians, in the end, despite the fact that it would only be welcomed by the “elder brother”. And it is understandable, we simply cannot afford to be hostile with Georgia in the present situation. This is the real politic, we at all cost defend the right to self-determination by our Artsakh fellow-countrymen, whereas we stay abstained with regard to self-determination of Abkhazians, Ossetians, and Chechens. The matter is that the motives for all moves made by Serzh Sargsyan are long ago not perceivable for the thinking part of the society of Armenia, nor the achievements are visible, even from the viewpoint of cynical real politic.

North Korea leading its own people to starvation, for example, has nullified debt of 11 billion dollars to Russia for its pro-Russian stance. At various times, Russia had waived the debts of Cuba (29 billion) and Syria (10 billion). Is it worthwhile reminding how the same Russia behaved with a total of 100 million dollars of debt by Armenia? Has anyone forgotten that we are the only country in the world that pays for hosting the military base of another country in its own country? But the latest requisition? When Russia in the most cynical form seized our share in “ARG” for an all of a sudden popped up debt. Indeed, let us understand for the sake of what Armenia is led by this path of humiliations and losses? For the sake of what does the leader of our country rush dragging us to a still non-establish and no progress-promising Eurasian Union? What logic is he guided by when he rushes to get closer to the country that has become a target for devastating sanctions by the world’s most powerful countries?

Is Serzh Sargsyan’s nothing guaranteeing statement enough or time will tell who was right in this hasty rapprochement? And if time tells that you have made a gross error like you did pertaining to notorious Armenicum, like you did pertaining to October 27 when you were in charge of the national security. For what sin you answered, or by answering, how should you compensate for those enormous economic and political losses caused to the country? These are unanswered questions that concern the public, otherwise everything associated with Russia is clear, as simple as the construction of the brick. In these days, a thought expressed by the famous American diplomat and Russian specialist, George Frost Kennan (16.02.1904-17.03.2005) related to attack on Ukraine is often quoted, which I would try to compose with my own, not tending to be perfect translation. Kennan has said, “Russia has no neighboring states but enemy and vassal states.” We, so as Ukraine, have never been an enemy to Russia. Unlike those ruling us guided by their narrow personal interests, we do not want to be a vassal, as well. This is the point.
