Why are people disappointed with the Customs Union?

September 18,2014 16:23

“Such sentiments can only be in the society only associated with information, also propaganda flows pertaining to the Customs Union”, such opinion was expressed by political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan, to the question of Aravot.am about why the number of people in the Armenian society expressing “pro” to the Customs Union (CU) accession is gradually decreasing (the political scientist is one of the Customs Union accession supporters). Note that the poll by the Gallup International representation in Armenia showed that versus to 2013, the number of supporters for the CU among today’s society has fallen by 10 percent.

Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan thinks that an earmarked mission is conducted against those who express “pro” to the CU. “The segment of the society, who was more supporting the establishment of a much deeper relationship with the European Union are conducting a major informational and promotional processes trying to reach the point that Armenia steps back from the idea of accession to the CU. The other one is the noise created around the CU at the international level, and often, the negative sentiment by member states to Armenia’s accession to this structure. Generally, the internal processes of this structure are also essential. We see that not everything is so smooth. There are disagreements between the member states.”

To the question whether Armenia’s accession to the CU is not at risk, the political scientist replied, “I do not see any risk. I agree with the substantiations voiced by the government. At this stage, when there is a choice, the CU is much more preferable and beneficial to Armenia.” Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan thinks that the European Union and the Eurasian Union conflict cannot last long. “Already, calls are voiced from both sides to find common ground. Even from the EU, signing of a free trade agreement between EU-EaEU is heard. By and large, there would be no difference from economic point of view in which Union Armenia will constitute. Basically, today, the Eurasian Union offers a lot more to Armenia than the European Union. European Union is only about the possibility of signing a free trade agreement, whereas Eurasian Union suggests a full membership. Purely from political point of view, this is a much more serious and profitable offer”.
