Recently, Chairman of Armenia’s Helsinki Committee Avetik Ishkhanyan announced that he hopes that the agreement of Armenia’s accession to the Eurasian Economic Union will not be signed. However, today, on October 10, in Belarus, the EaEU member states presidents signed this Agreement. In the conversation with Aravot.am, Mr. Ishkhanyan mentioned that his hope depended not so much from the will of Armenia, as not so much great desire of the EaEU member states to accept Armenia. “In my opinion, Russia’s desire to include Armenia into this Union was so great that it could influence its partner countries so that they do not impede this process. Nothing was depended on Armenia, because Armenia was doing the utmost to make its big brother happy and be a member of this Union.”
Avetik Ishkhanyan has high hopes that the Eurasian Economic Union, like the CIS, will be a structure that exists only on the paper. “But if the wish of its initiator becomes true (i.e. not an economic union, but a political union), in other words, becomes one of the forms of the Russian Empire, such as the Soviet Union, then it will have quite negative consequences for us, because I think that the russification may be continued on a larger scale.” But the greatest tragedy in all of this, according to Avetik Ishkhanyan, is the fact that there was no serious resistance in Armenia. He mentioned that during today’s rally of NA non-government trio, only Raffi Hovhannisyan had hinted at possible loss of independence of Armenia. “The remaining forces, in fact, absolutely did not talk about it.
In fact, the loss of Armenia’s sovereignty is not essential for them. They think only about taking the power in Armenia as an administrative unit and possessing the levers of corruption, and there is no serious political force with a prospect of maintenance and development of sovereignty of ideological Armenia.
