“The RA authorities oppose the 1991 referendum”

October 13,2014 13:07

NSDU Leader Paruyr Hayrikyan claims that the majority of the citizens of Armenia supported the accession to the European Union. He does not believe in the results of the polls conducted by “Civilitas” foundation on the theme of a Customs Union or a European Union, according to which the majority of citizens was aware of the Customs Union. He reminded that in order to determine the citizens’ preferences, NSDU had also conducted a poll. “For the initial phase, we had received 73 % for the Customs Union and 23 % for the European Union, afterwards, when the authorities did pretty much work, we had received 40 % for the Customs Union and 60 % for the European Union.” Note that according to the polls by “Civilitas”, 65 % of the population of Armenia has heard about the EU Association Agreement, whereas about 80% of the population was aware of accession to the CU.

Again according to the same polls, 34 % of respondents said that Armenia must deepen its relations with Russia, while 10 % of respondents think that the country should not have to choose between Europe or Russia. “The main part of Armenian people has a European orientation, the majority believes that our future is with the civilized world. But the biggest problem is that Armenia’s authorities opposed the 1991 referendum. A referendum was held, which refers to whether the Armenian people want to be independent from Russia, or relate its future with Russia. For twenty years, the propaganda worked for the idea that the victim killed for the defense of the homeland is called to be deceased for independence.

The defense for the homeland is not a fight for independence. They wanted to bring everything to the idea that our independence was from Azerbaijan, it was the main goal, when the notion of independence is associated with Artsakh movement. Today, even 90 percent of the citizens told that they support Russian there would be no referendum. Polls Surveys do not bear final legal force. The legal force was our referendum – to be independent from Russia,” said Mr. Hayrikyan.
