Again on the theme of “destruction”

October 15,2014 13:11

If you want to win the approval of some masses, to acquire the laurels of warriors for the sake of the nation, to prove that you are “for the people”, then you should be neither crucified nor offer yourself for self-immolation.  You can continue your carefree and prosperous life, even enjoying some big-and-small positions. To all future politicians who are going to be tormented with pains and sorrows of our nation, I would prompt a few words that will immediately open a door for them to great politics or the arena of public activities. “The country goes destruction,” “The country is on the edge of abyss,” or if you want to be closer to the folk vocabulary, “This country is a wreck.”

Both in the taxi, courtyard pavilion, rally and press conference, after pronouncing these magic words, no one will ever suspect that you’re thinking day and night about this country and the people, that your courage, “spirit” is high, and you are the “fighting type” of this nation.

The continuation of conversation depends on the place you are. If you are in the taxi, then the next word of the taxi-driver will be “last day, I got another 10,000 drams fine.” (Judging from how the taxi-drivers drive, it is quite natural). If this is how you start a conversation in the courtyard pavilion among domino playing retired people, then the conversation will be continued on the theme of abundance of sausages and working factories in the communist period. In both cases, the moody and tearful shades of the conversation are inevitable.

There are also mournful ups and downs during the press conferences and rallies, but there is also a light at the end of the tunnel, in the face of those who speak of the coming apocalypse theme and promises to save the country from destruction. The “saviors” are periodically changed: Armenian Revolutionary Federation, NDU, PPA, “National Unity”, ANC and so on. Often those who, according to the “saviors”, “have brought the country on the edge of abyss”, a few years later, they act in the role of the “saviors”. But, let’s put all these aside. What do different people mean, when more than 20 years they are talking about “the wreck of the country”? To answer this question one must guess how these people visualize the country destruction. Will the Great Flood come back? Will an atomic bomb be dropped on Armenia? Will Turkey and Azerbaijan conquer our country? These options seem unlikely to me.

The only option that is really possible is that Armenia will cease existing as a state and de jure will become a part of Russia. If this is destruction, then I agree that today we are close to it. But the reason is not the speedometer, nor sausage, nor the government, nor the oppositions, nor their “dramatic” co-relationships. All of this are trivial matters. The reason is that the vast majority of the population of Armenia does not have a price for a penny.
