The theme of “Aravot” online “Face to Face” talk show is discussed by Armen Hovhannisyan, Board member of “Hayazn” political party, and political scientist Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan.
Aram Abrahamyan – One of the “Aravot” readers, Robert Baghdasaryan, is asking, “Leaving our sorrows behind, are we discussing the Ukrainian problems?” Please, answer this question.
Hrant Melik-Shahnazaryan – Of course, the question is a good one. But, there is a popular saying – a truly wise man learns from the mistakes of others. In fact, we see that the situation in Ukraine is the result of foreign influence and external choice. Ukrainian people actually was able to orient, or was not allowed to be oriented. It is exactly 1 year, since the country has fallen into chaos, and it has become a real tragedy for this state. Ukraine, as such, does not exist, and this is in the event that it seems to be the center of Europe. However, we see that the geopolitical struggle is such a thing that such things are happening in outwardly stable region. For Armenia, the external choice can be much more dangerous. Therefore, of course, let’s not forget our sorrows, but also be careful to the sorrows of the neighbors.
A. A. – In other words, the case of Ukraine is educational that the people did an external choice: whether right or wrong, and to put it bluntly, fell into the fire.

Armen Hovhannisyan – That one, too. But there is also the people’s choice in general. To cope with even severe circumstances, or to go to drastic action, everything has its consequences, which you should try to calculate. Of course, life is much more complicated, and I am always for these calculations to be made already on the outer examples rather than at the expense of your own victims.
A. A. – Well, let’s calculate: they got rid of Yanukovych, it seems to be good for them because he was corrupt, oligarchic and so on. What happened then? Did they stand on the right path?
A. H. – I cannot give a definite answer. There are also positive moments. It sounds strange, but as a result of all of this, a Ukrainian political nation began to be formed, in the very political sense, not ethnographical. 35 million people realized themselves as Ukrainians, including there are people there by the most different origin. About 10 million people realized that they could not consider themselves Ukrainians in the political sense. This perhaps is a positive step for the future, because one day this bomb was going to blow out. If people live in a country, but do not have a common ideal, the hero of the one is other one’s executioner, and vice versa, if one hates the language, which is the country’s state language, while this language is sacred for the others, it was very difficult.
A. A. – Is a political nation formed?
H. M.-Sh. – It can be said that there is such a process, simply the sentiments now are very euphoric. Euphoria continues, the Maidan is over, but we see that the government is still in the process of formation, and in addition, hostilities are underway. Shocks bring these positive or negative aspects after them, but actually, I also think that these problems could have been solved much more humane. There is a thousand and one possible options of working with the people to form a political nation, and especially the civil war was one of the least possible options. The losses really are too big. We see that there is a crisis of power, so far no government has been formed, the government official is not treated as an government official.
