December 4 voting was not the end of the world

December 06,2014 13:24

I do not like the Eurasian Economic Union at all; I do not see the prospects of this structure, I also do not see what we will be doing there.

Like a man should seek to communicate to smarter and more advanced people than he, so as the state should seek to make an economic alliance with the countries, which in comparison are on a higher development level, economically and technologically, where the laws function, where the level of corruption is low, where the civil institutions and freedoms are more advanced, and where the government authorities are accountable to the public. If our future European partners are largely behind us in these parameters, then this is no sense being in such an alliance.

But after December 4 parliamentary voting, I have read such desperate comments, as if it really was the end of our state, and the only move afterwards is the self-immolation at the Republic Square, or at least breaking the fence of the National Assembly. Maybe the extreme estimates sound nice in terms of populism, but they have nothing to do with the reality.

Allegations about “losing the sovereignty” and “defeating the independence” are exaggerated. We have not made any more radical move on December 4 than we had made before by providing our property for debt, giving the distribution networks, the great part of communication, gas pipes and many other things to Russians. All of this, of course, was wrong, but it’s not the end of the world, nor a destruction. Extra dramatization of the situation in Armenia seems to become something like a virus.

Today, our state is feeble, sick, but it exists by internationally recognized borders. Yes, the system that is being established with us does not contribute to the country’s economic and political development. It is for this reason that we reply hope on outside forces, above all, on Russia. The system needs to be changed: slowly, persistently and with consistent efforts. But it is our domestic problem that we need to solve; the external dependence incurs due to this problem.

No need to break any fence, once the NDP’s “all-national movement” did it, and neither the country nor the NDP got use of it. Moreover, no need for self-immolation. As François Rabelais used to say, “I am ready to fight for my beliefs, up to the fire. But not including.” A certain dose of healthy skepticism toward everything will not hurt anyone.
