According to the estimates by Head of the Armenian Institute for International and Security Affairs, Stepan Safaryan, Armenia’s membership to the Eurasian Economic Union contributed to escalation of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. “Armenia’s membership to the Eurasian Economic Union changed some of Armenia’s balances in the system of international relations, and such a change in balances cannot pass without consequences in the international surroundings of Armenia and Artsakh.
The fact is that the assault against Armenia and Artsakh was carried out in the year, when Armenia became a member of this Union, therefore, it is obvious that the EaEU membership affected adversely in terms of the peaceful settlement of the conflict”, said Stepan Safaryan to Aravot.am. According to him, this is also due to the tension that started in the beginning of the year on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. “Number one conclusion of the summer events was that Armenia failed to demand a serious investigation regarding the tension on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, and could not reach the point of imposing sanctions against Azerbaijan. Should we have achieved sanctions and estimates by the international structures for making Azerbaijan accountable for killing Karen Petrosyan through torturing, summer adventures, penetrating into the Armenian rear through subversive groups and organizing assassinations and sabotage, today, we would have been in a different situation. But on August 7, Serzh Sargsyan went to meet with Aliyev in Sochi and gave verbal promises that there will be no war, came to Armenia, announced about it and went to rest, while written agreements are not respected in this world, not to speak about verbal promises. The unpunished Azerbaijan did not change its behavior at all and in the beginning of the year, it continued implementing subversive activities on the border. Of course, we are going to have growth of tension.”
As said by Stepan Safaryan, time and events completely refuted the false promises that Armenia’s membership to the EaEU will increase the security level of Armenia and Artsakh.
