Historian about “French” tragedy

January 17,2015 17:14

According to Edik Gevorgyan, Associate Professor at the Faculty of History, Pedagogic University, the Armenian people should not be indifferent to Charlie Hebdo tragedy. On January 7, the armed terrorists stormed the Charlie Hebdo satirical magazine office in Paris and killed 12 people for publishing caricatures on religious themes. The tragedy received a great response in the world, people in different countries were expressing their solidarity with France, and qualify the attack on the magazine as an infringement against freedom of expression. Different opinions were expressed on this in Armenia, too, for instance, Anush Sedrakyan, Deputy Chairman of “Free Democrats ” party, in a press conference described the incident as an anti-image for Europe, through which they try to present people that Europe is a world dangerous and full of problems.

NA MP Tevan Poghosyan is sure that it was a clear ISIS message that they were not only in the Middle East. “Aravot” talked on this matter with Edik Gevorgyan, Associate Professor at the Department of History, State Pedagogical University, “Today, serious political processes are going on in the world, about which no one can remain indifferent. Once, well-known American political scientist Samuel Huntington in his work entitled “The Clash of Civilizations and The Remaking of World Order” said that a clash of civilizations is going on in the world, a clash of cultures, which underlies the religion. Sooner or later, these clashes will become inevitable between different religious communities. According to Huntington, they can first of all be implemented in China.

Later, many political scientist noted that it may be just in Europe. Unfortunately, these predictions became true, and today, a serious clash of civilizations occurs in the heart of Europe; citizens, journalists and police officers become casualties of terrorists,” said the historian. According to him, the civilized world, particularly the Christian world cannot be indifferent to the occurrence. “It refers especially to us, the people who have seen genocide. Once, we were also alarming that the great powers and Europe should not remain indifferent to our pain, as it is known that when a crime is not convicted, it gives birth to a new crime. We have condemned what happened in France. We believe that on the threshold of experiences with civilization clashes, Armenian nation is not alone, it refers to the Christian cooperation. We have big communities in many countries, Artsakh, unfinished war, and everything that happens in the world, directly or indirectly, affects us.”
