“It would be better not to leave the impression that all NA political forces are involved in the decision to join the EaEU. Our party voted strongly against and to speak about our country’s sovereign decision is not correct. This decision was made under Vladimir Putin’s open pressure. I expressed hope that the EaEU membership will remain on the paper. Armenia will continue deepening its relations with the EU,” so the Heritage faction MP Alexander Arzumanyan tried to save the situation at the 15th session of the EU-Armenia PCC today when one of the members of the EU delegation, one after the another, was making tough and sarcastic speeches about Armenia’s decision to join the EaEU. They derided that Armenia has lost from this membership, but, what to do, this is your sovereign country’s decision.
Adriano Martins, Deputy Head of Division Eastern Partnership-Bilateral of EEAS, acting on behalf of the EU at the Committee also said, “Whether it was a sovereign choice or not, we respect your choice. We want to add the membership, in which you are involved. At this point, it is not possible, Belarus is not a member of the WTO. This is a restriction from the viewpoint of establishing a free trade zone. As for the Republic of Armenia, this will not be the first of such attempt. We signed an agreement with the CU member Kazakhstan, in addition to their obligations. It is your choice, we regret, but we respect. We regret that you have wasted 2-3 years. We believe that we suggest a good thing to you, otherwise we would not have suggested. We also saw in what circumstances you made the decision, it coincided with the visit of Putin to Baku, with 4 billion agreement on selling weapons. There were specific circumstances of why you made such a decision. We respect your decision, we are interested in deepening our relationship, hoping that the level of relations will be clarified. We are not continuing this cooperation for charity purposes, we do it based upon the importance of the security of the continent.”
