The matter that Putin, Nazarbayev and Lukashenko have met in Astana on March 20 without the President of Armenia, and the matter that after this meeting, Putin has spoken about the idea of a common currency within the EaEU suggested our commentators to assume that Armenia “is dismissed” from the EaEU. Personally, I would fully support if we were “dismissed”, but it seems to me that these interpretations are too superficial.
First, we must, of course, admit that every event has its political implication. It is an undeniable fact that Armenia has a smaller weight in this union than the aforementioned three countries that make up, as said by Lukashenko, the core of the EaEU. Should the German and French leaders have meet and, among other issues, have discussed the EU matters and have not invited, let’s say, Estonia to the meeting, it seems to me, the Estonians would not have too many hang-ups. Importantly that Estonia represents to the EU official institutions and official events on the foundation of a peer. In the EaEU, these “foundations”, in my opinion, are not so peer-to-peer, however, in all cases, the EaEU meeting in Astana was not an official event and ne need to fall into hang-ups of a smaller nation. Let’s leave the torments on the subject of “Oh, we were neglected” to the Brazilian and local TV soap operas.
Now about the common currency. Even if Kazakhstan and Belarus were 100% ready for it agree to it, and the work started as of today, then it would require not less but 5 years, during which a thousand and one things can happen. But the three “core” countries are not ready for it, nor, except Russia, have expressed such a desire. A common currency can exist in established and effective structures operating on mutually beneficial basis. The EaEU is not the kind and I am sure that it will never be. Of course, it may occur to the mind of some people to print some meaningless “tugriks,” but it will have a short life. Ultimately, the degree of integration can be of a different level. Being a member of a union, you can both have the same currency and different currencies.
Our “mentality” of making a national tragedy of anything and seeing a geopolitical conspiracy in everything has found its vivid reflection on the internet, where the authors pursuing whatever interests or completely “unselfishly” create alarming sentiments. The rumor about contractual soldier Andranik Grigoryan passing to the enemy’s side is presented almost as a destruction of our army. Even if the Azerbaijani propaganda broadcasts are true (about which we have had many occasions to doubt), I would allow myself to remind you that during the Great Patriotic War, hundreds of such cases were recorded. Anyway, it did not prevent our army to have a crushing victory over the Nazi Germany.
