“Washington will take decisive steps”

April 17,2015 13:00

The analyst interprets the events that followed the Pope’s speech made on April 12 at St. Peter’s Church; the Pope offered the liturgy, which was dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide. “Aravot” had an interview with Political and International Studies Center expert, analyst Ruben Mehrabyan who said that Turkey was not adequate in response to Vatican. According to the expert, to demand an explanation from Vatican, to recall the Turkish ambassador and to blame the Pope in the field of international community will have a reaction, but not in the interests of Turkey. The Pope’s characterization is out of doubt; he considers the Armenian Genocide, Stalinism and Nazism the same. “The Pope put a standard that will separate people who are not considered in the mention field.

Turning to Turkish Prime Minister’s statement that the Pope`s act had religious bases, Mr. Mehrabyan said.  -“It’s not a problem of religion, for the simple reason that those who survived the genocide, returned to the Muslim countries Muslim territories, Middle East, Iran, and have had no problems to live there so far.”

Speaking about Russia’s reaction which hesitates whether to visit Yerevan on April 24 at the presidential level, or not, Mr. Mehrabyan said.

– “After all, Russia is a country which recognized the genocide, and this fact cannot be changed. It is  of no importance who will be here on April 24. Maybe no one will”

The analyst also noted that the Russian press introduced Vatican`s events from a different point of view where a ”reconstruction”  of Stalinism standards are felt in the state level  and that is why they did not like the Pope at the summit, where the Genocide, Stalinism and Nazism were placed on the same level.

Mr. Mehrabyan believes that after the April 12 the world learned more about the Armenian Genocide. “Many have heard about the Nazis, the Holocaust, about Stalin but very few knew that the all these was on the bases of Armenian genocide”- says Mr. Mehrabyan and notes that the international media’s reaction also had enlightening, informative effect.

Our interlocutor thinks that this event also created the preconditions for the success of our foreign policy, but subsequent victories depend on future relations that we will create with the outside world.

Analyzing all this, we again focus on the behavior of the United States and notice that Obama announced that Armenia representing team, the discussions of our surrounding guide to Hillary Clinton. Mr. Mehrabyan avoids making any predictions on this issue, but he says.

-“USA cannot remain indifferent and I think that Washington will take quite decisive steps and  these steps  will  be noticed a few days later.”
