Recently I have conducted two debates with the interval of two days; participants over 60 were debating with participants about 40. I do not want to give names to make an impression that I am assuming the role of a judge; all 4 participants were developed, read, people with deep intellect. But it seemed to me that in both cases the “elderly” mentality is more free and open than the youth. The latter`s thoughts were perhaps more accurately, but more routine, less “risky”. It seems to be the opposite: of people lived not long in the “Soviet” conditions, so they must have few “fears”.
But not everything is so simple: “fears” are also different. There is a genetic fear that someone will knock at your door at night, then “plainclothes men” will enter, will turn upside-down your apartment and you will be taken to an unknown destination. A general principle is right with this case of fear. By each new generation this fear is disappearing and this scene has almost been overcome. Of course, many of my readers will debate, but as soon as one enters the Internet, you make sure that everybody says just what he thinks, even in not so much “aesthetic” formulations. However, there is a fear that is more complex and has a more multi-layered character that is “fear” to confront public opinion. Compare, you can write or say any swearing to any official person: this fear we seem to have overcome. But try to admit that you do not hate the Turks, do not consider them as our age-old enemies, and consider that our problem is with the Turkish authorities, not the people. Try to insist that Armenia is not being destroyed. Or, let`s take more everyday example, try to tell the taxi-drivers that they need to respect traffic rules, at the same time they will “pounce” on you.
Thus, there are areas where it is “safe” to stay within the accepted stereotypes. And here, how strange it may seem, the older generation is more flexible. I cannot give its “scientific explanation”, I assume here that the role plays life experience and the understanding of what is considered to be the absolute truth today, tomorrow will be reviewed.
…And maybe older people realize that praise or affronts are only spices of life. The main dish of life you make yourself.
