Today, many people blame Serzh Sargsyan for conceding Putin’s compulsions and accepted the accession to the EaEU, while Levon Ter-Petrosyan managed to maneuver and not to lead to the situation that Putin would put the issue of making a choice before us. In this regard, in the interview with Aravot.am, Head of the Chair of Global Politics and International Relations at the Russian-Armenian University, also the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Arman Navasardyan, said, “Levon is a good politician. I was a Deputy Minister during Levon’s tenure. During the hardest times, Levon managed to get weapons from Russia for free because they were friends with Yeltsin, he also received grain from Turkey and money from the United States. He managed to do it. But on the other hand, you know what, times were completely different. The political situation was different.”
To our question of whether the EaEU accession was the result of Serzh Sargsyan’s wrong policy or it was dictated by the time and no matter who the president of Armenia were, he should have gone by the same way, Arman Navasardyan replied, “Everyone knows how much I admire our public policy. I am not an opposition nor a pro-government, I say sincerely that whatever is done in the direction of the foreign policy is done with “5+”. But as to what extent it is possible to bring it to the final shape, this is the question.” To our question of whether the personality plays a role, he replied, “The personality also plays a role. The foreign policy is the continuation of the domestic policy. If you are unable to solve domestic issues, you can never solve the foreign issues. I’m counting 3 monsters in Armenia: corruption, monopoly and migration. If these 3 elements are not eliminated, this whole conversation would become idle.”
